West of scotland obstetric Anaesthetists

THE STORY SO FAR

WoSOA was started in 2000 by Dr Moira Simmonds then Consultant Anaesthetist, Inverclyde Royal Hospital, primarily to bring together anaesthetists with an interest in obstetric anaesthesia and to provide a forum where they could meet regularly, exchange information and discuss issues.

Since then, WoSOA has grown in terms of membership and has extended the scope of its activity. Our current activities include regular educational meetings including a bi annual study day with international speakers.

Early achievements include: successful midwife study days, which have stimulated improved “in-house” midwife training, and the setting up of a 6 month subspecialty training program.

The aim of the organisation is to promote obstetric anaesthesia in the West of Scotland. Currently the main areas of effort are:

  • To provide education in obstetric anaesthesia by organising evening and day meetings. The Royal College of Anaesthetists recognise the educational content of these meetings.
  • To supervise the subspecialty registrar program in conjunction with the West of Scotland Deanery
  • To provide a forum for anaesthetists interested in obstetric anesthesia

An elected committee coordinates these efforts, but we very much welcome suggestions from the membership about what future directions you want us to move in.
